The Danish Air Force has assigned a brand-new Lynx helicopter to Nato’s Operation Ocean Shield. It will be based off the frigate Iver Huitfeldt and will aid the growing anti-piracy effort in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.
This past October, the Lynx and its support crew from 723 Squadron left Denmark to travel to pirate-infested waters off the coast of Somalia.
The move was made on the fly, as officials took advantage of the fact that the Iver Huitfeldt is docked in port at Seychelles, a tiny island nation off the south-eastern coast of Africa. While the ship changes crews, it is easy to add the helicopter to their arsenal.
This new helicopter will replace an old one, which was marked to be swapped out for a while. A Russian IL-76 aircraft will transport both helicopters in order to speed up the swap.
